With the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, you can put a very fuel-efficient spin on family-friendly travel. This plug-in hybrid compact SUV will treat you to 24 miles of all-electric range, a smooth ride, and modern smartphone integration. The Outlander PHEV not only makes your daily drive more cost-effective, but also increasingly comfortable and accommodating.
The Outlander PHEV comes standard with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and battery-powered motor to deliver a total output of 221 horsepower.
When you first hit the road, this compact SUV will cruise for up to 24 miles on battery power alone. After it depletes its all-electric range, the Outlander PHEV switches to hybrid power, and if the hybrid battery runs out of juice, this SUV will run solely on gasoline power.
Although it can operate using only gasoline, the Outlander PHEV is thriftiest with a charged battery. Recharging times vary according to power source: with a 120-volt, 8-amp outlet, you can recharge the Outlander’s battery in 14.5 hours. A 120-volt, 12-amp outlet reduces charging time to nine hours, or install a 240-volt, 16-amp outlet in your garage for a quick, four-hour charge. Finally, you can swing by a DC Fast Charge station to refill the battery up to 80 percent in just 25 minutes.
According to the EPA, the Outlander PHEV’s hybrid performance delivers 74 MPGe combined. With a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, you should be able to achieve about 320 miles of total driving range. Running on gas alone, the Outlander PHEV earns 26 mpg combined.
In addition to its thrifty hybrid performance, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a pretty significant all-electric range of up to 24 miles. If you tend to stick to short drives around town, you may hardly ever need to refill the gas tank. After the Outlander PHEV exhausts its all-electric capacity, it drives like a regular hybrid, using both its gas-powered engine and all-electric motor.
Properly equipped, the 2021 Outlander PHEV can tow up to 1,500 pounds. If you’ve got a Jet Ski, snowmobile, or other small recreational vehicle at home, Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid SUV can take it along for the ride.
From the outside, this plug-in hybrid SUV looks clean-cut and modern. A long list of standard features — including LED daytime running lights, rear privacy glass, and chrome trim — add modern style. The Outlander PHEV is also practical, bringing rain-sensing wipers, a remote power liftgate, and a tire repair kit along for the ride. If you like a little extra pizzazz, the Outlander offers aesthetic upgrades, including bigger wheels and a power sunroof.
When you and your entire family crowd into the Outlander PHEV, you’ll appreciate its spacious seating and impressive visibility. The five-passenger cabin has some road-trip-friendly features as well. For instance, the 60/40 split-folding rear seats let you expand cargo space as needed and dual-zone automatic climate controls create two separate temperature zones for long-haul comfort.
The Outlander PHEV also comes with some very luxurious features, like standard leather-appointed seating and heated seats that provide next-level comfort. For extra style, check out the optional diamond-quilted leather upholstery and faux suede cabin trim.
As you might expect from such a luxurious SUV, the Outlander PHEV also comes standard with an impressive range of infotainment gear. Plug your smartphone into the infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto software displays apps on the 8-inch central touch screen. You can also keep devices charged throughout the cabin, thanks to the front and rear USB ports.
This plug-in hybrid SUV can help you keep track of vital performance data, via its color multi-information display and Energy Meter.
You’ll also be pleased with the Outlander PHEV’s dramatic sense of safety. All three trim models are equipped with a long list of driver safety aids — like Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning — for help avoiding danger.
The Outlander PHEV is so fully loaded with standard safety features that there are only a few options, the multi-view camera system and adaptive cruise control. The latter is helpful for commuters, because it automatically adjusts your speed according to traffic flow, maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
Your Outlander PHEV comes with outstanding warranty coverage. For example, most competitors can’t match its 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. All powertrain components are covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. You’ll also enjoy five years of roadside assistance, so even if you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, help is never too far off.
You get three Outlander PHEV options: SEL, LT, and GT. The model that suits you best is the one that has the features you want at a price that’s equally appealing.
The SEL kicks off the lineup with the lowest MSRP and an impressive array of modern features. This Outlander PHEV keeps you comfy with power-adjustable front seats and connected with Mitsubishi’s infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Not to mention, when you need a quick battery boost, you can always pull the SEL into the nearest DC Fast Charging station.
For extra exterior style, choose the LE: its glossy black trim and roof rails set it apart from the base model. The LE also adds a power sunroof, a coveted feature that brightens your daily drive.
The top-trim GT is stunning, outside and in. It adds LED exterior lights, including LED high and low beams. You can also use its Adaptive Cruise Control system to create a safer and more relaxing highway drive. Inside, upgraded leather seating and a heated steering wheel roll out the red carpet for you and your loved ones.
Mitsubishi is releasing a completely redesigned Outlander for the 2022 model year, and a new Outlander PHEV is expected to join the lineup eventually.
The reworked compact SUV will feature a rugged new exterior and an increasingly elegant cabin. You’ll also see some new tech features and driver safety aids, including an optional 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
We’re not sure yet how Mitsubishi plans to tweak the Outlander PHEV performance, but as soon as we hear anything, you’ll be the first to know!
