The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is an all-star midsize sedan, surpassing the competition with its roomy cabin and cargo hold, impressive tech lineup, and friendly price.
This four-door midsize sedan has a sleek, windblown look while its sharply styled headlights and smooth, long lines highlight it's upscale feautures. Standard features, including chrome trim and LED headlights and tail lights, add to the Sonata’s classy style. To add a little panache to your Sonata, you can choose from a range of wheel options and Glossy Black trim.
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata cabin is set to impress, so if you’re lookin for a roomy people hauler, you’ll be especially pleased with the Sonata’s roomy cabin. This Hyundai sedan also offers a lot in terms of luxury, with options like leather upholstery and ambient interior lighting available to spice up your daily drive.
The Sonata also does an excellent job of battling the elements. During the cold season, optional heated seats and a heated steering wheel create a cozier drive, but when summer comes back around, the optional dual-zone climate control system and ventilated front seats are ready to cool you off.
No matter which Sonata trim model you select, you’ll find an abundance of high-tech infotainment features inside the cabin. Luckily, though, controls are easy to figure out, thanks to a very intuitive layout. Each of these midsize sedans comes standard with an all-inclusive infotainment system, featuring an 8-inch color touch screen and complete smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional features include a bigger, 10.25-inch touch-screen infotainment interface, navigation, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
When it comes to on-road safety, the Sonata is a major player. Hyundai’s midsize sedan comes standard with high-tech safety systems — including forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection — that are designed to actively avoid danger. The driver attention warning system even monitors you for signs of fatigue and alerts you when it’s time to pull over for a catnap. The rear occupant alert system reminds you to take young children and dogs with you when you exit the cabin and the rearview camera includes parking guidelines to help you back into a space.
The Sonata also offers a range of optional safety upgrades. For example, the blind-spot collision-avoidance assist system helps you decide when it’s safe to change lanes. A blind view monitor is also available, using cameras to display your blind spots when you engage your turn signals.
Some of these security features also add a touch of modern convenience. For instance, Hyundai Digital Key technology lets you use a compatible smartphone as a key and the Proximity Key, which includes push-button start, knows when you’re approaching your Sonata and unlocks the doors accordingly.
You can choose from three Sonata powertrains. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine offers a relatively quick ride, thanks to a healthy output of 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. This base engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission to send a smooth stream of power to the front wheels.
The SEL Plus and Limited balance power and fuel economy with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (180 hp, 191 lb-ft). These models also include paddle shifters, giving driving enthusiasts increased control over their ride.
The all-new N Line offers high-performance thrills, speeding up your ride with 290 horses and 311 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for quick-shifting action.
Whichever powertrain you select, you can expect a smooth, refined ride at cruising speed. The Sonata always feels composed, inspiring confidence with its study braking and predictable steering.
For the thriftiest Sonata performance, look no further than the standard powertrain, which helps you earn up to 32 mpg combined. The upgraded turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is only slightly less thrifty, offering 30 mpg combined. Unsurprisingly, the sporty N Line powertrain is less efficient, but it’s not too far behind the other models, with a combined EPA rating of 27 mpg.
There are five Sonata trims: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited. Each adds to the last with more in performance and luxury features.
The Sonata SE is a crowd pleaser, rolling out the welcome mat with modern infotainment gear, safety aids, and a thrifty powertrain. You can use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to access smartphone apps on the SE’s 8-inch touch-screen infotainment interface. Features like lane keeping assist and forward collision mitigation actively help you avoid costly damages.
The SEL adds to the base features lineup with more in high-tech comfort and safety aids. Heated front seats and the dual-zone automatic climate control keep you comfortable in spite of extreme weather conditions and extra safety features include a blind-spot monitor and a safe exit warning. The former alerts you to vehicles you may not be able to see, and the latter warns you when it’s unsafe to open the car doors. Another favorite SEL feature is the hands-free trunk opener, which makes it easy to drop armloads of stuff into the cargo hold.
SEL shoppers can also choose to add the Convenience Package, which upgrades your daily drive with an auto-dimming rearview mirror and wireless smartphone charging pad. This package also includes little luxuries, like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and panoramic sunroof.
The SEL Plus comes standard with the contents of the Convenience Package where you’ll find stylish simulated suede and faux leather upholstery. This Sonata also offers an impressive blend of power and efficiency with the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and paddle shifters to give you greater control over performance.
SEL Plus shoppers can add the Tech Package, a bundle that adds navigation, a premium Bose stereo system, and extra protection with lane-keeping assist technology. This package also adds a panoramic sunroof to the SEL Plus.
The N Line is an all-new performance-based Sonata, providing driving enthusiasts with an extra dose of speed and athleticism. In addition to its exclusive powertrain, the N Line also improves performance with sport-tuned suspension and steering.
The Limited tops the Sonata trim hierarchy, adding to your daily drive with genuine leather seating, ambient interior lighting, and a head-up display. This Sonata also adds to the list of safety aids with a surround-view monitor, which gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Sonata when you’re parking. Use the Smart Parking Assist to park your Sonata remotely, via smartphone app.
Your Sonata comes with one of the longest-lasting warranties in the business, courtesy of Hyundai.
Hyundai completely redesigned the Sonata for the 2020 model year. We expect the automaker to continue to update its midsize sedan every year, but it’s going to be a while before it sees another full redesign.
